Lately I've Been Thinking a Lot About Food.

And how we use it in our lives. How people can use it to form community and nourish themselves and their families. How food, just like love is often best in it's raw form.

This week why not challenge yourself to eat food you recognize in it's original form. An apple instead of apple sauce. A baked potato instead of french fries. If you eat meat, a steak instead of hamburger.

Let food nourish you and your community. Invite someone to share a meal with you. Serve foods in their true form. Let the conversation flow. Drink a glass of beautiful organic wine. Light a candle. Smile. Laugh. Eat.

We are so in that place ourselves. Rick read Michael Pollin's Omnivores Dilemma (I'm scared to read it for fear of having more issues than I already do). I am disgusted about what the food companies have done to our food supply. Our governor made a comment last week stating every family in Michigan should eat a meatless meal once a week as a way to increase their exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables but of course the meat farms groups had a fit and made a huge stink about it. Ridiculous but she has to take the statement back. I see this as completely missing the point. We, as a nation, are in big trouble because we have lost all common sense as the big companies control everything and the focus has shifted from making a superior product at a good price to big payoffs for the the share holder and CEO/CFO/CwhateverO. About dividends and bonuses rather than us. I loose sleep over this type of stuff but thankfully we can afford fresh foods, have a great independent health food store (no Whole Foods), and a terrific organic CSA that also sells chickens and eggs from his farm. Every little bit helps.

How is DC?

Thanks for the great comment Danee!

I too lose sleep over this issue. It's as if people think if they can put it in their mouth, chew it, and swallow it, it must be food. It doesn't matter if it was grown or manufactured! I love what Michael Pollen says, "if it was made in a place where someone had to wear a hairnet it isn't food". I quoted that loosely but it paints a picture doesn't it? My other favorite of his is "if it arrived through the window of your car, it's not food". I can't argue with that!

Things in DC are good. We are settling in. I am finally sorting out my studio and am looking forward to breaking out my sewing machine (and paints, and soldering gun, and, and, and, and) as I have a few skirts I want to sew for the summer. I also am going to break ground on our garden soon but there is snow in forecast again. I mean really, how much can one Californian take?

Hope all is well with you. Thanks for reading the blog and THANK YOU for commenting. I really appreciate your contribution!

Love,
Liz
